*Offered to children 6 years and older. Boys only hip hop classes offered starting at age 6!
Hip hop dance originates from the 1960's 'street' dancers in the Bronx, NYC who had a HUGE passion for music, a natural knack for rhythm, but no access to traditional dance training so they created their very own original styles. Hip Hop has evolved into many commonly known disciplines such as break dance, pop and lock, street, funk, club and house dancing. At the heart of today's modern culture, our hip hop students take their skills with them far outside the studio building confidence showing off to friends and crowds at social events just like the original Hip Hop dancers did. With a focus on high energy, soul, and strength our students emerge as stars on the dance floor! All music is censored and age appropriate.
Level Placement
Classes are one hour long and placements are determined by TDA Directors based on child age and level.

History of Hip Hop
|
Hip Hop, also known as 'Street dance,' originated in New York in the 1970s. Evolving on the streets of Manhattan and the Bronx, it was developed as an improvised, social dance form, created by people who had a natural knack for movement and rhythm but no formal dance training. Hip Hop started as a movement reacting against traditional dance styles, as a liberation from technical standards emphasizing soul and feeling.
While pieces of modern, tap, swing, and African dancing can all be found in hip hop, this dance style is really in a class of its own when it comes to improvisation and an edge of competition. The movements in Hip Hop styles continue to evolve today but include: breaking, popping & locking, and roboting. One of the most well known 'founders' of Hip Hop is Kool DJ Herc who moved to NYC from Jamaica. He was the first DJ to make the Hip Hop rhythms by playing two record machines with the same record on both. He also extended the dance section of songs so that dancers could show off their moves for a longer interlude, laying the foundation for dance battles. Other leaders in the Hip Hop world over the decades include Afrika Bombaataa, Popin Pete, Boogaloo Sam, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Paula Abdul, Doctor Ice, MC Hammer, Les Twins, and Beyonce. In just a few decades, hip hop has created a substantial chunk of dance culture history, and dance lovers celebrate the innovative nature of hip hop choreography and style today! We love Hip hop because it has evolved into an art form that brings people together and has also continues to empower more boys to dance! |
